The Super Athletes- Epitome of Discipline, Dedication, Determination-Ronaldo-Virat-Djokovic

The Super Athletes- Epitome of Discipline, Dedication, Determination.

In the temple of sports and entertainment marvels, few athletes have performed beyond or above the range of normal or physical human experience. They are the epitome of success through their exemplifying excellence, discipline, dedication, and determination. They are the global icons in different disciplines of sports, but occupy the greatest seat in every sports lover's heart through their resilience and relentless pursuit of becoming the greatest of all time. Out of many legends, today we will place the three greats in three different sports with infinite fan following on the same platform of work ethics and domain. All are in the final phase of their profession and are due to retire in the coming period, based on the fitness level and the passion each one carries to remain in the top league. They have continuously proved with their sporting touch that age is a number till such time you carry it with grace and perform at the International level with admiration, reverence with their amazing physical endurance and robustness.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Novak Djokovic, and Virat Kohli… the three names, the three sports icons, the three legends, and each one has been termed as GOAT. At the ripe sporting age of forty years, thirty-eight years, and thirty-six years respectively, these sports icons have literally redefined excellence in their respective sports. Till today, they continue to dominate their presence in the minds of each of their individual fanatics, maniacs, and lovers with adoration and respect.

Before going deep into the common traits of these three sports icons and legends, if we put on record their individual achievements, anyone will agree in all sorts that they have something very big in common, which, apart from success & achievements, links to their personality, passion, and the hunger for striking gold at each level of their performance.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the symbol of Sporting icon, tenacity, and perseverance with 39 goals for his Country in World Cup qualifiers, is now the highest in this category in addition to the maximum number of goals for his Country at 141 goals. Out of the total 943 goals he has scored till today, after the World Cup qualifier against Hungary, he has 57 goals still to reach the magic figure of 1000 goals. In the last decade, from his age of 30 to his current age of 40, he has scored 463 goals, an amazing number.

Novak Djokovic, the ace tennis player and a Champion in every sphere, has shown tremendous resolution to achieve in every tournament and in all major Grand Slam championships. Amongst all Tennis legends, the Grand Slam semifinal appearances of Djokovic are enormous; To put it on record, he has reached the final four stages for the maximum number as mentioned: Australian Open: 12 times/ Roland Garros: 13 times/ Wimbeldon:14 times/ USA Open:14 times. Djokovic holds the men's all-time record of 24 major singles titles, and he is the only man to achieve a triple Career Grand Slam by winning each of the four majors at least three times. Djokovic is also the only man in tennis history to be the reigning champion of all four majors at once across three different surfaces, though not in the same year. He is the record holder for the most major finals played (37) and the only player to reach at least 7 finals at each of the 4 majors. At 38 years, the Serbian becomes the oldest man in Open Era history to reach the semi-finals of all four majors in a single season.

Virat Kohli, the ace Cricketer, icon of millions all over the World, is a performer and achiever to the core. Having scored over 27000 runs in International Cricket and 82 centuries, he is the number one batter in One Day Internationals. He is ambitious to reach the top at all times. To meet his ambition, Kohli employed the technical meticulousness of Sachin Tendulkar and fitness that was in the league of top athletes in the world, not just cricketers. As a result, Kohli became the most consistent all-format accumulator of his time, making jaw-dropping chases look easy; diligent and persistent; careful and dedicated effort, characterized by focus, discipline, and a strong work ethic, created the safest possible way to score runs.

What made these three Masters reach this level of stardom and excellence? Is it only talent towards their specific sports or something extra that binds them very closely?

The common characteristics & qualities which has led them to such brilliance can be covered through their extraordinary efforts.

The three D’s can be further classified and decoded to find the common string that binds them, and also to reach the maximum.

Discipline :

The work ethics and discipline in their training regime, lifestyles, and spending extra hours to maintain their strength and stamina are something to be believed.

Ronaldo has rigorous training routines, balanced diets, and is also extremely involved every minute of the time spent on the activities to craft his skills.

Kohli, known for his fitness training, transforming his habits with strict diet control, has given him the yardstick to be one of the fittest players, even at his age.

Djokovic’s sincerity and approach to physical conditioning, mentally preparing himself in each circumstance, and also recovery from a big game are legendary. All of them have improved year after year and maintained their strict discipline to remain at the top bracket for so long a period.

Determination :

All three Champions have, over the years have pushed themselves to stretch and reach a new goal, a new landmark. The acceptance of challenges under trying circumstances, coming back in a big way after a few failures, and evolving their game towards reaching bigger heights have been the most phenomenal attributes to their already achieved skills.

Ronaldo has reinvented his playing styles multiple times, shifting from winger to striker, thereby adding more goals in last decade to his tally; Kohli has adjusted to all formats of the game, making him the best batsman in One Day after his continuous success in test Cricket and Djokovic has improved his game drastically including the baseline game to have an edge over the others.

Dedication :

All of them are known for their mental toughness and perseverance, even in the most challenging circumstances. At the Global level and in a fierce, competitive world filled with setbacks, injuries, and intense pressure to come back with a scintillating performance, each one of them has displayed their attitude to come back strongly and script history, defying all obstacles and difficulties.

Ronaldo, while at Manchester United, had to leave midway through the season due to him being ignored and not making it into the first eleven days after days. (Ronaldo’s comments on his relationship with Erik ten Hag were explosive. The manager, who was rebuilding the team, never seemed to trust Ronaldo. Ronaldo felt sidelined and disrespected. The turning point came during a match against Tottenham Hotspur in October 2022. Ronaldo refused to come on as a substitute. Later, joining a different league away from the fanfare of EPL or La Liga to an unknown territory of Al Nassr was not an easy decision, but he did it, proved everyone his presence and came back even stronger in the International arena with scoring goals in all important moments, be it the European Championship or the World Cup qualifiers.

Similarly, Kohli had made numerous comebacks in each format and maintained his strength on the field by virtue of being the match-winner under challenging circumstances. Even though he has left the two formats of the game prematurely, but still holds the top rank in the One Day format.

During an interview with Graham Bensinger, Kohli revealed that while preparing for the Australia tour later that year (2014-15), he imagined himself dominating their best bowler, a ferocious Mitchell Johnson. The result? He ended up scoring a whopping 692 runs in the series, his highest ever tally in a Test rubber.

“If something looks difficult and if you don't convince yourself to go out there and achieve the opposite, you're never going to be able to do it. You can't just land in a place and say, I'll see what happens. That way, your chances of succeeding become very, very low,” said Kohli in the interview. His remarkable feat included four Centuries and a half-century.

Djokovic's mental bravery in high-stakes matches speaks volumes about his resilience.

In 2019, after winning the historic 4 hours 55 minutes-long Wimbledon final against Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic revealed that he had imagined himself as the winner even before entering the ground. The 2019 final is the longest ever in the tournament’s history, where Djokovic saved two championship points to be crowned as the champion in front of a partisan crowd, which was screaming “Roger! Roger!” Despite having everyone against him, it was Djokovic’s strong resolve that helped him register one of the greatest victories of his career.

“I play the match in my mind before I go on the court. I always try to imagine myself as a winner. I think there’s a power to that. You’ve got to keep reminding yourself that you’re there for a reason and you’re better than the other guy,” said Djokovic in the post-match press conference after the final.

However, there is a small deviation between them. Virat Kohli has retired from Test Match Cricket, the ultimate game of Cricket, which may be linked with his personal assessment with respect to the technicalities of the game, where he must have seen or understood the gaps, or it is the result of some unforeseen circumstances that he has not disclosed. The announcement of the retirement was done in a hurry, and at his age and his abilities, it is well thought that he could have continued for at least two more years.

Neither Ronaldo nor Djokovic has spoken anything on their plans of leaving the big stage. Ronaldo is still playing for his Country and intends to play the World Cup 2026. Being a team game and he being the striker, it requires matching the speed and the requirements to match the moves of his teammates, even on the big stage. Djokovic, despite his recent losses in Grand Slams in the semifinals, has indicated that continue and fight it out even though he knows that Tennis requires the stamina and endurance to stand out against his two main rivals, who are only aged 22 years, and it is becoming tough to win the titles; but he has not given up.

This can only happen with their genuine passion about their game, motivating self to maintain their supremacy fuels their sustained excellence. Each athlete has demonstrated an unrelenting commitment and dedication to taking their sports to another level and their persistent chasing of excellence.  The motivation that runs in their system leads them to overturn the competition to an individual mastery of the game.

More than training, they prioritize their dietary habits, adequate mental and physical rest to maintain and perform their best by remaining at their peak levels.

Both Ronaldo and Virat love to spend time with the family & children, Djokovic apart from finding good time to be with children & family also takes out time to nurture his passion on music. He loves to play piano. His daughter has started playing violin, hence his pose of Violin after winning the games has become a trademark style.

They have continued to perform at the highest levels, maintaining extraordinary skill, fitness, and an unquenchable thirst or flame for success.

Ronaldo, Kohli, and Djokovic are all globally recognized athletes known for their exceptional skills, discipline, and high levels of fitness in their respective sports. The three share a bond of mutual respect, with Virat Kohli particularly expressing admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and a growing friendship with Novak Djokovic, marked by exchanged messages and shared interests in fitness. They are often mentioned together due to their shared status as global sports icons and their dedication to maintaining peak physical and mental performance.

Their dedication to physical conditioning is legendary, with Kohli stating he is motivated by Ronaldo's and Djokovic's body fat levels and fitness. There is significant mutual admiration between Kohli and Djokovic, with a friendship developing over the years of texting. Kohli is also a known admirer of Cristiano Ronaldo, often referring to him as his GOAT.

Their energy, charisma, magnetism, and impact on the field reverberate with fans, drawing them to watch their matches. Because of their similar mindset and fighting spirits, it is interesting to note that innumerable sports lovers adore all three: Ronaldo, Kohli, and Djokovic

Ronaldo, Kohli, and Djokovic, through their remarkable journey with sheer discipline, dedication, and determination, offer valuable lessons for all, either in the field of Sports or even in our individual professional fields across all domains.

a)   The attitude and goal for each individual should be to empower the growth mindset, continue to learn, innovate, and adapt to the changing circumstances and scenarios. The learning cannot stop at any point, as it is said there is no age for learning. Similarly, either in sports or the work profession, at every level and every stage of the career, keep on learning, evaluating yourself, and contributing to win.

b)       The acceptance of success should be correlated to consistent achievements rather than brilliance displayed on a short-term basis. The disciplined schedules, the ethical way of moving ahead in the career, and also overcoming the shortcomings in a mature way with individual effectiveness, lead the way to thwart all challenges.

c)   Like in sports, failures in achievements, setbacks in leading successfully may happen; but the lesson learned from these three greats when matched in the professional outlook paves the way to peep into their success stories, where it is developing resilience and looking forward towards the opportunities and bouncing back strongly. This leads to achieving their committed goals.

d)          The most important aspect to stay in the race of excellence is the passion towards your profession, over of whatever you are doing, thereby not deterred by challenges or being complacent about previous glories & continue striving for the best results required to achieve the goals.

e) The work-life balance goes symmetrically with each activity, be it sports or professional work life. The core issue comes back to maintaining both physical and mental well-being. The success in each field is not only achieved by hard work, it is by the amalgamation of acceptable practices, discipline & hard work.

Talent in an individual is nurtured for excellence through a combination of all the above for continuous growth and determination in any challenging circumstances.

The three Masters of the game and their achievements are to be celebrated each day as a passionate sports lover, but let us all clutch the virtues they manifest to really follow them in our own journey in respective domains & professions to pursue the ultimate glory which may have eluded us.
