Virat-Rohit Road to Cricket World Cup 2027
The Ronaldo-Messi of Indian Cricket

The ROKO factor for the Championship fight.

Introduction

The One-Day Cricket World Cup 2027 is still two years away, but the countdown has already begun. One discussion dominates the Indian Cricket circles: the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in One Day Internationals and the World Cup 2027.

With the great partnership between the legends of modern Cricket, in the final One Day International of the series against Australia, it now remains crystal clear that Cricket India needs both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the journey to the World Cup 2027.

Indian Cricket has shaped over the years, and the contributions of Virat and Rohit are reflected in the success stories of big achievements, which include the last T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy. Over the last decade, both of them have demonstrated their leadership qualities and, through their consistency and efforts, could impart their rich experience amongst the current players of the team.

Virat and Rohit have a nearly 5500-run partnership amongst themselves with 19 century stands, and they have continuously proved to handle all pressure games. The team man they are has been very well articulated by Virat in the post-match interview at Sydney. He aptly said about their partnerships, “We two know our games and can read the match position so well. The opposition also knows if Rohit and I are together for 20 overs, any target is gettable.”

Isn’t this a clear message that “we two together will win it for India”?

The road map for the Cricket World Cup 2027 is being shaped by Cricket India. The presence of ROKO in the team will not only provide the required strength and balance, along with preparing the next generation for the most important Championship fight.

They not only provide the strength of statistics, but their presence always acts as a mentor and true team player.

Experience and Youth – The Win-Win Situation

With the commencement of One Day Internationals as a prelude to the World Cup, the performance of the Indian team and all the players will be measured with the conclusion of each series.

The blend of Youth and experience will be the key in all the coming ODI series, where rich experience flows into the youngsters' domain. The youth benefited from a new resurgence, a new hope to win the World Cup 2027. The last win by India was in 2011

Under the captainship of MS Dhoni, with Virat then representing the youth in the team learned a lot from the great experienced players the like as Sachin, Dhoni, amongst others. The blend then was a great strategy, and similarly, today it is proven that experience still matters.

In the last One Day International against Australia at Sydney, both Rohit and Virat had won the game for India, anchoring match match-winning partnership of 168 runs. They have again proved beyond doubt that the partnership between them is the best thing that can happen for Team India. Their partnership, staging out their plans for the chase in a phased manner and displaying tremendous temperament, testifies to their resolve in their fight for the Country.

With Shubman Gill leading the side in One Day Internationals and both Virat - Rohit in the team, it represents how their presence & experience complement the youth. The team, though, had lost the series 2-1, but there have been some good performances in all the departments.

The bowling unit demonstrated their qualities with Kuldeep Yadav, Harsith Rana, Washington Sundar, and Siraj finding their rhythm in odd games, so was KL Rahul, and all-rounder Axar Patel did justice to his role. The team lost the first two One-Day games due to a lack of a big partnership, and more so, Virat was not able to score in the first two games. The third ODI was the game-changer with the best players of white ball Cricket displaying their class. It reminds us of a very important saying, “form is temporary, but the class is permanent”, with Virat proving his charisma.

The young players who will represent Team India will immensely benefit by sharing the dressing room with the stalwarts, the greatest modern-day players in white ball Cricket.

The next 24 months will be very crucial for the preparations for the World Cup 2027, and the need for a youthful energy clubbed with conditioned equanimity is what is required- precisely what Virat and Rohit bring to Cricket India.

There are a lot of talks on age while deliberating on these greatest of greats of white ball Cricket, but it is a matter of time when the 38-year-old and 36-year-old ROKO will establish once again their supremacy with a forceful vengeance.

The last day against Australia is a small display of fireworks by Rohit and Virat. Both displayed why they are so an important constituent of Cricket India.

Virat, with his exceptional fitness level, can beat any youngster in the field, the peak fitness required to perform at the top level. Rohit, over the last few months, has also worked very hard on this very important parameter and has proved it in the field. Their chemistry and the approach towards white ball cricket make an important landmark in World Cricket.

Virat and Rohit, with their precision, patience, and batting predominance, make them indispensable batting geniuses even at this age in white ball game.

2: Journey of the Indian Team with Virat & Rohit.

The exceptional journey of Team India with both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma playing alongside in white ball games is many. To name the important tournaments where they both played together are the 2013 Champions Trophy, 2015 World Cup Cricket, 2017 Champions Trophy, 2019 World Cup, 2024 World Cup, where India finished as runners-up, and then 2025 Champions Trophy, with India emerging as the Champions under the Captainship of Rohit Sharma.

Similarly, from 2012 to 2024, in each edition of the T20 World Cup, ROKO had played together, and Team India was crowned Champion under the Captainship of Rohit Sharma in 2024.

Team India’s journey in white ball Cricket has been fabulous and a tale of evolution. The statistics of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in white ball Cricket itself are a testimony to their greatness.

  1. Though there is enough time left for the ROKO to play the 2027 WC, I personally believe they must play the WC 2027. Fitness is the key not the age which is a number only. Koholi had some footwork problem in the initial two ODIs but in the third ODI, He had shown his class. Apart from that, India should have played some practice matches before ODIs, which was not done. I really couldn't understand the reason behind it. Australian pitches are very bouncy and it takes time to get adjusted with. Was it Gambhir and Agarkar's plan ?

  2. We will love to see both again in WC 2027. But their forms and reflexes have to be there until then. Don’t want to see them like we saw many in their last outings.

  3. The 2027 Indian team is expected to undergo a generational shift — focusing on younger talents like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and others.

However, if either Rohit or Kohli continue delivering strong performances and maintain top fitness levels, selectors should retain them.
