Test Team: Is this Transition or Turbulence?
#The
fading of modern era dominance-post the legend phase
Indian Test Team After Virat, Rohit & Ashwin:
A Deep Dive Post South Africa Whitewash & Guwahati Collapse
Introduction:
With the setting Sun at Guwahati, the
Indian Test Cricket saw its new low, succumbing to a disciplined bowling of the Proteas. The uncharacterized meek surrender of the Indian team reminded me of the legends Virat, Rohit, Pujara, Ashwin, and others who
stood as a rock under any circumstances.
The complete whitewash in two test series marks
the sign of big turbulence in the name of transition.
The Indian test team ruled the home pitches
with excellent performances both in spinning and sporting wickets, but with the
retirement of the modern era dominating legends, the road ahead is bumpy. Weird
and unpredictable team selections, rotation of batters at various positions, only
confirm the whimsical approach.
The dust flying to justify the process will
die down, but the harm it has already caused will haunt Indian Test Cricket with
the question in mind:
Is
this a painful but natural transition, or is it a worrying dip with deeper
structural issues?
Is this the end of modern era dominance?
Exit of Virat, Rohit, Ashwin & Pujara.
The question is now being asked at all levels:
Was it a planned exit of the icons?
Who has gained in the process? A vacuum
hard to fill when you force the modern-day legends to simply sit out or send them signals to quit.
The retirements of the icons Virat Kohli, Rohit
Sharma, and Cheteswar Pujara have created a fissure in the much-acclaimed steady
Indian batting lineup. The absence of Ajinkya Rahane is also felt, remembering the
grit and determination to fight for the team.
Absence of spinning master Ravichandran
Ashwin has proved the incompetence in the section. What Simon Harmer could
extract from the Guwahati wicket couldn’t be seen with the current line-up.
All transitions in the past were smooth and
helped the process, but staring at the mindset which has been induced in the
current team's composition only strengthens the message of being lost in the
world of cricket.
The stability is missing at all levels, including
the leadership, and their absence has given way to the identity shift of the
current Indian test team.
Selection
& Combination Chaos Under Gautam Gambhir — Bold or Reckless?
The new combination of the selection
committee led by Ajit Agarkar and the coach Gautam Gambhir has raised many
questions.
- Frequent rotation in the batting orders and dropping
players without giving sufficient time to settle.
- Unconventional combinations causing imbalance
- Lack of settled & stable core — making team
identity and confidence fragile
The past experience of the rebuild process,
transition phase was observed with Saurav Ganguly as the Captain, followed by MS
Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma, which gave a rejuvenated Indian team. However, the volatility now is hampering the players’ development and affecting team
cohesion badly.
Unstable Batting Order, team selection, pure batters
& No. 3 Still Up in the Air:
The importance of the number 3 position in Test
Cricket has always been prominent from the likes of Vengsarkar, Rahul Dravid, and Cheteshwar
Pujara, but the team management continues to toy with more than one player to
try and shelve the process. The traditional solidarity is yet to be
ascertained.
The strangest of all was when Washington Sundar
was selected to bat at number 3 in the Eden Gardens test match, he was sent at number
8 in the Guwahati test. Such weird team decisions will hurt the team-building process.
The team gets selected based on all-rounders to
provide batting strength!
When pure batters, Sarfraz the proven batsman, Rituraj Gaikwad, are waiting to get a call, how on earth does the team management come up with the idea to play 3 or 4 all-rounders, 2 wicketkeepers, and a senior pace bowler performing in the domestic cricket, sitting out?
None of the tried players have cemented their place in the batting positions they have tried, and it is becoming more than a laboratory for experiments or a phase of musical chairs to fit wherever one thinks to their wisdom.
The
South Africa Series: A Warning & a Wake-Up Call — Historic Loss at Home
The
homework South Africa had done before coming to India was visible in their
mindset and all-around performances. Tackling of Indian spinners and also being prepared to perform on the pitches favoring the home team was visible.
- The senior pro Simon Harmer proved to the world what disciplined bowling, using the crease & the wicket can
do.
- The team under Temba Bavuma
displayed character to dodge the conditions by going back to the basics
and playing with patience. The Eden test is a living example of sheer grit
& determination.
- The Guwahati test provided icing
on the cake for the Visitors with some extraordinary performances. The
bowlers who can bat proved to be very heavy for the Indian all-rounders and bowlers. Muthuswamy & Marco Jansen batted brilliantly.
- Simon Harmer & Jansen bowled India out in two innings, forcing Indian batters to surrender on their knees.
- In the second Test at Guwahati, India
collapsed for 140 while chasing a massive 549 — leading to a 408-run
defeat, the largest Test loss by runs ever for India at home.
- South Africa completed a 2–0
series sweep — their first Test series win in India in 25 years.
- The home fortress has been breached — two successive home series whitewashes now underscore how fragile the current setup is.
This defeat exposed the forced transition phase, resulting from the whims and fancies of the team management. The shaky batting lineup, unable to counter under pressure, crumbling like a house of cards, could be witnessed in both the test matches against South Africa.
The Guwahati test match, which had a flat
wicket, only to have some support in the 4th innings, experienced two
opposite poles performing. South Africa is coming out as champions, and the Indian team, with no clue whatsoever, is surrendering like a club team playing the giants.
The dominance has washed away in the water
of the Brahmaputra.
Indian Bowling: Some Resistance- balance searching for an
answer.
Indian pace attack spearheaded by Jasprit
Bumrah instilled some confidence, but what about the rest? The spin department —
once the hallmark of Indian dominance — feels rudderless. Old horse Jadeja and unorthodox
Kuldeep held the fort to some extent, but the kill was missing as seen earlier
with Ashwin and others. Given subcontinental expectations, this lacuna hurts
especially when batting fails.
Domestic Cricket is important, and you do not select Md Shami with his big comeback performances. Questions abound; answers need to be identified for the betterment of Indian Test Cricket.
Is
this Transition or Turbulence? — The questionable status continues.
With the start of the South Africa test series, the phase was earmarked as transition, with retirements of the greats, fresh faces in the teams, and experiments to settle the best was accepted as the rebuilding process. However, after the catastrophic loss and record defeat, the managed transition gave way to blunders, exposing both the team and management.
- The process now is rated as a tactical blunder
and structural turbulence.
- The unpredictability of selections, unsettled
batting slots, and loss of spin dominance suggest the team is struggling
to find its next identity.
- While talent exists, the need is to find the right
man in the right position.
The lack of stability and poor performance under pressure raises questions about whether India is rebuilding — or just drifting.
Way forward— Path to Stability & Rebuilding
While
the return of Virat & Rohit back in the Test Cricket Arena rests in the decision
of BCCI, deep thinking is required, settling all the differences to rebuild
the Indian Test Cricket team, which dominated the circuit and participated
in two WTC finals.
With
both players active in ODI games, a second thought is required to be given
for a smooth transition with the blending of experience and youth in the current
WTC series of 2025-27.
The
urgent need is to navigate and stop this disintegration and turn this planned transition
into a resurgence. Indian Cricket must needs to seriously think about:
The
effect of T20 Cricket on the batting display is more than evident. The mental balance has to
be reframed to have a settled batting in test cricket.
Settle a core batting order— blend the experiences with the young- providing real backing and time for consistency.
Reduce impulsive and biased selection swings — the talented players performing in the domestic circuit should be given time to cement their spots, thus building confidence and roles.
Invest in spin-craft development and leadership — rebuild spin wisdom, groom spinners tactically.
Focus on temperament under pressure —the icons & the legends handled big run chases; played to teams’ requirements; the new team must replicate their grit & determination.
Build a new identity — technical supremacy, fearless in approach, balanced thought process — embrace the basics and be engulfed in discipline.
Conclusion:
The Post-Legend transition has begun — but the turbulence needs to be addressed.
The shock of recent losses — especially at
home — shows that the post-dominating era of Virat, Rohit, Pujara, and Ashwin isn’t just about replacing names. It’s about
rebuilding identity, backbone, and balance.
The current chaos — shaky batting order,
uncertain selections — signals turbulence more than transition.
Transition or Turbulence is what is being
conceived. But at times, the turbulence, if handled with logical conclusion, helps
to rekindle the hope of a new formation.
The furnace of transition, where a stronger and more resilient team is forged with a true blend of experience and youth can give a new dimension to the rebuilding process.
Only time will tell if this becomes
the launch pad for India’s next golden era or a prolonged slump with deeper
cracks.
I don't think this is a post legend transition. First we need to look if Virat and Rohit really has finished. I don't think so and if it's then we have others in the bench who can really perform good.
ReplyDeleteTo me it's a nonsense approach of our selectors and coach. A nasty politics going on at BCCI.
JUST REMOVE THAT DUO.
Post legend is the name given by forced retirement in the name of transition.
DeleteYou are correct on very poor approach to damage the established set up.
The number of test matches should be increased .
ReplyDeleteAgree...2 test series can never judge the teams balance.
DeleteGambhir Agarkar bhagao - Indian test cricket bachao! Gambhir was a mediocre player amongst the stars of that era - like Sachin, Laxman, Dravid, Sehwag and Sourav - that has left a permanent complex in him - now with power in hand - he is promoting mediocrity and pushing in mediocre players!
ReplyDeleteSir this is one of the excellent analysis of whole series. A complete dissection of whole Indian cricket. Wish you all the best in your new endeavour.
ReplyDeleteEvery system has a process for change, the system to continue and reach new heights.
DeleteIndian Cricket is a nothing less than an universal religion. The emotions and bonding with the game is at different level...this sensitivity is most important to have the best playing for the Nation...Age is just a number....form is temporary- class is permanent; let the best team play out of so many talented seniors and juniors.
Thank you
DeleteAll that you mention is valid. Solution is there for every problem if able minds with test cricketing brains come together. BCCI must act as a corporation with shareholders.
ReplyDeleteVery well said. Yes there is a solution to every problem. BCCI with their focus approach can definitely intervene and take correct & effective steps.
