Hardik storm blows Proteas - T20 One: India vs South Africa

Journey begins for T20 World Cup’ February 2026.

Introduction:

The 1st T20 engagement between India and South Africa played at Cuttack, generated a lot of interest with the T20 World Cup just months away to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Both teams resembled their best combinations, preparing for the Championship fight.

Shubman Gill is back in the squad, and so is Hardik Pandya, who wasn’t playing the recently concluded One-Day series. Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel, the bowling all-rounder, are the other players in the first eleven.

The wicket looked even, with the ball coming into the bat a bit slow in the initial overs. Overall, the dewy conditions as forecasted later in the match prompted Aiden Markaram to opt for fielding.

It was the devastating innings of Hardik Pandya rescuing the Indian team from 78 for 4 to 175 for 6 with Hardik remaining not out, scoring 59 runs (28 balls: 6x4, 4x6)

The last ODI vs South Africa saw Virat Kohli play a cracking innings, and in the first T20, Hardik Pandya reminded us of his arrival on a strong note.

The Indian story:

The match had an eventful start with Shubman Gill back perishing in the 1st over. The agony continues for Gill in T20s. Since the Asia Cup, he has not looked confident while playing this format.

Shubman Gill is being projected as the Captain in all three formats of the game; however, both in One Day’s and T20s, he has failed to live up to the expectations. The buzz in the air now tilts for Sanju Samson, who is being projected as a much better batsman in this format.

The collapse continued with Surya Kumar Yadav, Abhishek Sharma, and Tilak Varma couldn’t survive for long. Ngidi was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 3 wickets for 31 runs in his allotted overs. Jansen, though, wasn’t successful in claiming wickets but was instrumental in three wickets with his superlative catching skills.

Axar Patel and Hardik Pandya continued building up the partnership. The Indian innings saw some breathless killing of the deliveries by Hardik Pandya. He was ruthless, picking the ball right and hitting it all over the ground. The average of 210 saved India to a respectable score of 175 runs.

Chase by South Africa:

The 2nd half ought to be interesting with South Africa having set batters in this format of the game. The century maker in the 3rd ODI, Quinton de Kock, couldn’t handle a beautiful away-moving delivery, and the 2nd ball of the innings did the trick.

Thereafter, the wickets fall at regular intervals with all six bowlers claiming wickets. Bumrah reached the coveted mark of 100 wickets in this format and became the first Indian to achieve this rare feat, along with four other bowlers in the World to scalp 100 or more wickets in all three formats of the game.

Indian spin and pace combinations were at their best. Axar Patel and Varun Chakravarthy together claimed 4 wickets for 26 runs, while the partnership of Arshadeep, Bumrah, Pandya, and Dube was responsible for the other 6 wickets, conceding only 48 runs.

South Africa were bowled out at their lowest score of 74 runs in a T20 International, thereby losing the game by a big margin of 101 runs. The South African batters fell to the Indian attack like a house of cards.

Markaram couldn’t take the advantage of winning the toss and the initial advantages while bowling till the time Hardik unleashed his willow to strike hard and lift the morale of the Indian team.

Hardik Pandya was rightly adjudged Man of the match for his hurricane 59 runs and one wicket at the crucial juncture.

Preparation for T20 World Cup:

The series still has four games, and it will be on the part of the Indian team to continue the winning streak. Team South Africa, on the other hand, needs to reframe their strategy and game plan to come back strongly.

The Indian team is on cloud nine with the return of Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Axar Patel in the team. The trio has turned out to be very effective in the game, and their comeback has scripted the victory with ease for India.

The Rohit-Virat combination in the last edition of the T20 World Cup led the way to the much-awaited victory, and after their retirement, it will be up to the new set of team & players who need to take the legacy forward.

It will be up to the best eleven who need to play the game of their life to sustain and win the championship slated in early 2026.

Path for ODI World Cup 2027

In the coming days, the next ODI series against New Zealand, India will be waiting for another triumph with the best combination expected to play in all the next games till the World Cup 2027.

It is pertinent for the best players to play this format of the game, and who can be more fitting in the scheme of things than Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, and Jasprit Bumrah? Shubman Gill has been declared the Captain of the ODI, and with all four joining the team, the composition of Team India will be the most formidable ever for the World Cup 2027.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are in great form; the comeback of Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah will add to the strength of the team.

Importantly Indian think tank should be prepared to leave aside all biases and work for the right balance between the senior players and the young talents in all the tournaments leading to the T20 World Cup, 2027 ODI World Cup, and ICC World Test Championship 2025-27.

Conclusion:

Indian Coach giving preferences to the young talents is a welcome sign for Indian Cricket; however, there has to be a perfect blend between the seniors with tons of experience and the young talents, the face of the new India, and perhaps no biases at all in the team composition.

There are a few players who are in and out of the team and should also be in the playing eleven in the upcoming games to make them ready for the big tournament. Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, and Harshit Rana are the ones who are in the team and can make a great combination based on the ground and wicket conditions.
