“Virat-Rohit: Goodbye to a generation that defined Indian Cricket” -The stage of Uncertainties-“2025 to 2027”.
“Virat-Rohit: Goodbye to a generation that defined Indian Cricket.”
Introduction:
They were labeled past their prime…
They were labeled old and unfit for International Cricket….
They were labeled for not being committed and not serious towards the game….
The recent ODI series between India & South Africa, riding on Virat Kohli's supremacy & Rohit Sharma's brilliance, brought some smiles to the Indian Cricket fans. They responded with only one word, “performance”.
While the legends Virat and Rohit no longer remain in the other two formats, their absence in all three formats marks the end of an era, a generation that defined Indian Cricket for nearly the last two decades.
The mixed performances in the Test series loss and the T20 series win have raised questions about the team's composition. The intense reactions by the coach and his post-match press conferences direct his pointed arrows to the players failing to perform their jobs on various occasions.
Even after the T20 series win, Surya Kumar Yadav pointed the finger at himself for poor batting form. But why still the debate on the role of the Coach and the Selector continue?
Where is the bias in Cricket India?
The new Cricket regime is on the path of reformation and re-establishment, with the Champion senior players Virat, Rohit, Ashwin, Cheteshwar, and Ajinkya already retired from Test Match and T20 ODIs. One-Day Internationals are nicely balanced, with both Virat and Rohit continuing to play the format.
The new generation of players, the young talents, and the experienced lot of KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja form the backbone of the Indian Test team. The last series against South Africa saw some poor Cricket by the Indian team, with the captain injured midway in the first test match.
T20 Cricket saw some enchanting batting and bowling in the first game and an equally disappointing performance in the second game, both in batting and bowling. How come a team suddenly slips to a downgraded performance in a span of two to three days?
The debatable decisions of the team management and the coach in sending Axar Patel at number three speak of the indecisiveness in the thought process. In the last few series Indian Coach has tried eight batters in this crucial position, and is still searching for the right combination.
Shubman Gill is in horrible form in this format and is clueless while negotiating the initial overs. Why is he being pushed so hard in white ball game, when he is tentative in his mindset?
Earlier, Gill was pushed for the captainship in ODI and is now the vice captain in T20. The plan by the selection committee is to have the same Captain in all formats, but whether this is working when performance is the parameter, who will judge it, and answer this important query?
When Rohit Sharma is in superb form in ODIs, why has the Captainship been taken away? At least till the World Cup 2027, there should have been continuity.
Sanju Samson is not the preferred wicket-keeper-batsman, and Jiten Sharma is the man taking his place in the first eleven in the T20 format. There is no answer to this strange selection in the first eleven. On the other hand, Shivam Dube is playing game after game.
Md Shami is ignored time and again in white ball format, Md Siraj is not selected in ODIs, and Prasidh Krishna gets the preference over them. A lot has been mentioned about Harsith Rana and his performance, but the coach’s dependability has a lot to do with his presence in the team. These decisions have also tilted the match in favour of the opposition’s camp.
Washington Sundar, the utility man, is part of the setup in the Coach and team management’s thought process, which is definitely a welcome move. Hardik Pandya, back in the T20 format, is another player who needs to be in the first eleven in ODIs as well.
Jasprit Bumrah, the weapon to destroy the opposition, has to play in all formats, if India wants to be in the finals of all three formats……..T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup 2027, and ICC WTC 2025-27.
Inconsistencies in the Performance
The 2nd T20 game saw some dubious performances by the Indian bowlers and batters. The bowling unit was a disaster with Arshdeep bowling the longest over with 13 balls, Bumrah not in his usual self, and unable to penetrate the batsman’s defense on a single occasion. He gave away 45 runs in his 4 overs.
Again in the 3rd ODI, the same bowling unit displayed the best, with Arshdeep Singh being the man of the match. The 5th ODI proved to be the day of performances by Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakravarty.
Hardik, the man of the match in both the first and final games, and Varun Chakravarty, the man of the series, tried their best in the series.
Shubman Gill in T20 games has scored 291 runs at an average of 19.4 in 15 games. Surya Kumar Yadav is the other batter who is totally out of form. He has scored 316 runs at an average of 21.0 in 15 games.
Another player whose mediocre performance is being questioned in the T20 International circuit is Shivam Dube.
The team and T20 World Cup, 2026:
The team for the World Cup has been announced. There are surprises, and well-grounded inclusions and omissions, but still the debate on the right combination continues.
Shubman Gill, who is reported as injured, and the wicket-keeper batsman Jitesh Sharma have been replaced by Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh. Axar Patel has been nominated as the vice Captain, Surya Kumar Yadav retained as Captain, and the team composition is still left with unanswered questions.
Where is Yashasvi Jaiswal? Why is he time and again ignored? Why is Shivam Dube being considered? Is it only with his brand as an all-rounder?
Will Harsith Rana do justice to his selection?
Surya Kumar Yadav will be trying hard to come out successful in this big championship fight, or else it may be his last International appearance. He may be leading for the last time in the World Championship, and after him, who should be in the reckoning?
The next Captain with his all-around capabilities is none other than Hardik Pandya.
The final team for T20 World Cup 2026 as declared is: Suryakumar Yadav (Captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Rinku Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Washington Sundar, and Ishan Kishan will gear up for the final championship challenge.
Will the new look Team India be able to retain the crown that Rohit and Virat won in the last edition of the T20 World Cup?
ODI World Cup 2027: The road ahead
The performance of the Indian team in the recently concluded One-Day series against South Africa has paved the way for a winning combination. Subhman Gill and Shreyas Iyer were injured and not in the playing eleven. However, considering the best playing combination, both will be in the playing eleven for One-Day International games.
The presence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has changed the team's dynamics; the young generation players have benefited from their experience and game planning.
The other senior players have found a lifeline to build a strong unit and fight to win the World Cup 2027, which has eluded the Indian team in their last outing in 2023 at Ahmedabad.
The upcoming ODI series starting in New Zealand will answer a few questions on playing eleven and the task ahead towards glory.
There is a need to shuffle the main prospects to represent the Country in the final stage and arrive at the best combination.
Do we require a thoughtful and smart Captain for the ODI World Cup campaign? The answer as an Indian Cricket lover is “Yes”. This is again a debatable topic; Should we rely on the expertise & experience of Rohit Sharma or the transitional team's new Captain, Shubman Gill?
The task is daunting, and so is the challenge. The best team amongst all will be crowned the World Champions.
The silver lining in the preparation by Team India is the participation of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Subhuman Gill, amongst others, in the domestic circuit.
Rohit and Virat started their domestic dominance, each scoring a Century in the Vijay Hazare tournament. They have proved their seriousness and commitment towards the game. Defying all odds and proving that age is a number, the ROKO combination is all set to bring laurels for their team and Cricket India.
Based on all previous performances and a rich blend of experience & youth, the choicable team for the 2027 World Cup should be with them as below:
Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Md Shami, Md Siraj, Rituraj Gaikwad, Washington Sundar, Rishabh Pant.
What are your thoughts?
The real test of Cricket: ICC World Test Championship.
The current status of Team India has definitely taken a back seat with the recent back-to-back losses against the visiting team, South Africa.
Until August 2026, the Cricketing calendar has no major Test series coming up for India, and it is up to the preferred players to continue their dominance in their respective domains in the International & domestic journey.
Lots of gaps in performances, team selection, and referred biases became a topic of discussion after the last series loss. The time has come to really ponder what went wrong.
To start with the batting sequence, it is hard to believe that the Indian team has no specialized batter at number 3, the crucial pillar in the batting structure. The middle-order batting has seen a lot of shuffling and instability. The bowling unit has struggled both in pace & spin departments.
Keeping in mind the credible success in England to level the series, it is still believed that the thrust to present the best combination has been missed.
Learning from past experiences, the requirement is for an unbiased process to pave the road for the ICC World Test Championship. The team requires the balance of young and experienced; the blend of talent and performance.
Selection of the team has to be for the best results, and thus, rather than the players' desire to represent India in their choicest format, it should be based on one’s strengths to be part of the team.
Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah are such players in the current day who need to be part of all three formats and thus should be considered with proper planning.
Both Virat and Rohit, who have time and again distanced themselves from making any comments on their comeback in test cricket, are the biggest setbacks for Indian Test Cricket.
Should they stage a comeback for the last time to see Team India in the ICC WTC finals? It is all up to them to save Cricket India.
Leaving aside the presence of Virat & Rohit, the composition for the best test team would be from:
Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (WK) (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Rituraj Gaikwad, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Sai Sudharsan, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Dhruv Jurel, Akash Deep, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shreyas Iyer, Devdutt Paddikal.
Will Md Shami, Harsith Rana, and Prasidh Krishna be in the reckoning?
What is your opinion about the future composition of the test team?
Conclusion:
There are many questions, searching for the right answers.
The missing link between the Youth and Experience, the rich blend which otherwise would have been a win-win situation for Cricket India to emerge triumphant in all three formats of World Championship, is Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma.
The two are in their best form and would have guided/steered the Indian team to victory in all formats. It is Cricket India's misfortune that we have treated them in a manner that they never deserved.
Had it been Australia or England, Virat and Rohit would have never been released to compete in only one format, which they did out of compulsion and to protect themselves from any further disregard for their reputation.
The challenges are many, and how Cricket India moves ahead in all formats, only time will answer these questions!

In my opinion, the timing of announcement regarding “ROKO retirement” in May 25 was perfect. However, they should have been spaced out by format with retirement, from TESTs immediately, from T20 after T20 WC and from ODIs after ODI WC. That would have given Indian Cricket the time to adjust and us the fans, what we would have loved. As for the team captain and coach / manager, there should be only one captain and one manager across formats at any one point. I am sure one can find one. Lastly, the selection board has to change and the coach has to go.
ReplyDeleteYes, the steps towards transition would have been much better gradually.
DeleteHowever the current management thought otherwise to push them out for no reasons.
