T20 Cricket spreads its wings:

The white-ball format with 20-over innings is gaining popularity across the world, and nations traditionally the stronghold of football are coming out of the shadows to participate in this edition of the T20 World Cup 2026.

Teams like Italy in the main league are a testimony to the popularity Cricket has gained.

The associate members, starting from the Netherlands, Nepal, Scotland, and the USA, have already raised an alarm on their passion to prove a point on the big stage.

The big teams were pushed into a desperate situation in each of the first games these four teams have played.

The opening phase of T20 World Cup 2026 has shown the Cricketing World that Cricket is really the game of glorious uncertainties. 

SKY- the Surya for the Indian team:

The tournament started with a few excellent performances by the minnows. 

India were precariously placed at 77 for 6 with the USA rattling the Indian top order batters. The wickets tumbled one after other when the Captain played a lifetime knock to pull India back in the game and build a fighting total.

Suryakumar Yadav showed his temperament and class while displaying character to lead the team from the front. His 84 runs off 49 balls is testimony to the great comeback I'm 2026 in this format of the game.

Suryakumar had decorated his innings in two phases :

In the first 28 balls, he had scored 30 runs with four 4s; the time to rebuild the innings.

Next 21 balls, he went on a rampage, scoring 54 runs with four 4s and four 6s.

Hitting in an arc of 360 degrees, SKY justified his name and the punch line of Mr 360 degree. One of these shots is bound to draw accolades for an excellent twist of the toes, unable to balance, but hitting the ball for the maximum, tumbling to keep the inertia going for the hit. 

Suryakumar Yadav in 2025 was in search of his form, and just before this World Cup in 2026, he came back with a vengeance to thwart the opponents with his powerful shot-making abilities. Amazing player he is in this format of the game. 

SKY with Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh could carryon and put a formidable total of 161 runs. The USA couldn't sustain the pressure while batting and lost the game. Md Siraj, coming back to the team as a last-minute replacement, claimed 3 wickets.

The thrilling encounters:

It was a nightmare game for Pakistan, with the Netherlands reaching close to a great victory as they did in 2009 while playing against England. Pakistan were critically poised at 114 for 7 chasing a target of 147, when Faheem Ashraf pulled a stunning victory.

The most absorbing game till now is the courageous display by the other new entrant, Nepal, who were just in the process of pulling a thrilling victory. The matches rolled onto the last ball for the decider, when Sam Curran, the great bowler in the deaths ensured victory for England. 

Early it was Jacob Bethell and Harry Brook who helped the team to reach a decent score of 184 runs, while the Nepal bowling unit tried to restrict the flow of runs.

Nepal's batting circled around Captain Rohit Paude, Dipendra. Lakesh joined at the fall of the 4th wicket when the score was 126 runs and carried his bat while chasing down the score. Lokesh remained not out at 39 runs off 20 balls, and Nepal could close their innings at 180 runs. It was not a defeat by 4 runs, it was the beginning of a new era, where the associate teams have proven themselves to be the proud entrants in this edition of the T20 World Cup. 

The other teams that have started the campaign on a high note are Scotland and Ireland. 

Scotland did a great job coming in as a replacement for Bangladesh in their first game. West Indies were restricted to 182 in their allotted overs. Scotland were cruising at 133 for 5 when Shepherd struck thrice, and his hat-trick ensured Scotland were bowled out for 147.

Ireland, although playing this format and being the senior-most amongst the associate members, played excellently by limiting Sri Lanka to a modest score of 163. Ireland were inching towards the total with 120 for 5 when the collapse happened, and Ireland finished their innings at 143.

Canada, Italy, the UAE, Namibia, and Oman have started their campaigns and are waiting to produce some excellent competitive games ahead.

Way forward:

T20 World Cup 2026 has started on a promising note with both the regular and associate members providing entertaining Cricket. There are still many more matches on the plate where teams have much to prove towards improving their standings in the World T20 Cricket. 

The difference between the big teams and the associate members gets reflected in their inability to keep their nerve till the last. The inexperience and lack of competitive games further multiply when the last-mile destination remains elusive. 

ICC needs to provide the associate members with a calendar of T20 Internationals, even with the regular members, for a reasonably good number of games.

For the home team, Suryakumar Yadav has a task in hand to lead his team to a Championship fight for the last time.

India takes on Namibia in their next game, followed by the big game India vs Pakistan on the 15th of February. 

Pakistan will play against India contrary to their earlier decision, and it will be an Interesting duel on cards.

Will India repeat history and defeat history by winning the T20 crown in succession & for the 3rd time, or will it be another Nation to lift the trophy, will be witnessed in the coming days.
