Virat 'the finisher' eludes "Team India"; Is it the Strategic debacle? T20 World Cup, 2026-Super 8
"Team India"
Is it the Strategic debacle?
T20 World Cup, 2026-Super 8.
The aspirations and excitement for the T20 Men's World Cup, 2026 Super 8, have been met with two major setbacks.
Sri Lanka lost to New Zealand by a margin of 51 runs, and next India lost to South Africa by 76 runs.
It was construed that Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma would take charge as the youngsters to balance the vacuum created by Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli, but what we are witnessing is a serious gap, with no clue whatsoever in this format of the game.
He left for the new generation, but they are still to take over!
The missing ROKO factor is now haunting the Indian dressing room.
Are the coach and the chief selector appreciating the shift of balance?
The Indian team's batting lineup was blown away by the strategy and effective bowling of the South African bowlers. The targeted highest run chase and the self-pressure created by the Indian batters resulted in such a humiliating loss.
Decoding the humiliating loss:
A few important aspects come to mind while we dissect the Indian think tank’s game plan.
- What should be the Opening pair? Was it right?
- Runs drying up for Tilak Varma; Why is he continuing?
- Washington Sundar: Is he really a T20 player?
The most eligible all-rounder and the Vice Captain of the team, Axar Patel, dropped in his known venue & wickets.
- Kuldeep Yadav is cooling his heels on the sidelines.
- Can we not give another chance to Sanju Samson?
- These are a few Strategic plans which Team India now needs to ponder.
When the team was set to play, ignoring all the above, why were these decisions made, and what did the batters do in the middle overs?
When the opening stand couldn't yield runs, the entire batting lineup fell like a house of cards.
- Ishan failed, Abhishek again got out to a silly shot, which speaks of the mindset.
- Suryakumar Yadav tried, but Tilak Varma struggled.
- Washington Sundar coming ahead of Hardik Pandya was again a blunder at that stage.
The lower order had nothing to offer, and the strategy of maximum all-rounders gave a big jolt to the Indian dream.
South African Strategic Planning:
The early collapse in South African batting was arrested by a great middle-order comeback.
From 20 for 3 to 117 for 4, both Miller and Bravis took the centre stage, and Stubbs made an effective contribution thereafter. The score of 187 for 7 definitely was a big target to chase by India, their highest run chase target.
Jasprit Bumrah could only provide some resistance during this onslaught and finished with a Bumrah-like performance at 3 for 15. Arshdeep Singh paired with Bumrah to finish at 2 for 28.
Indian bowlers Varun Chakravarty, Hardik Pandya, and Shivam Dube were taken to task by the South African middle-order batters.
Should we only depend on Jasprit Bumrah, or do we need a balanced bowling attack?
The target to chase a 180+ score for the 1st time and the team crumbled under pressure. The team is habituated of the job of run chase being done for ages by the G.O.A.T Virat Kohli and this game his absence was clearly felt.
In the history of the T20 World Cup, India have successfully chased a target of more than 150 only thrice in their T20 World Cup history: 173 against South Africa in 2014, 161 against Australia in 2016, and 160 against Pakistan in 2022. All three matches share a common denominator: Virat Kohli. 82 off 51, 72 off 44, and that magical 82 off 53 in Melbourne; each time it was Virat the saviour.
That strategic intent to build the innings, that adaptability in pressure situations and the awareness to read the game were totally missing by the Indian batters.
The South African Captain is opening the bowling with his off-spinners. The turner surprised the man in form Ishan, who perished early to a silly stroke.
This T20 World Cup has seen 12 Indian wickets falling to off-spinners, a serious issue which needs to be addressed immediately.
Abhishek was not in his golden touch, Tilak Varma not in his groove and with Ishan gone early, Suryakumar Yadav also remained clueless.
The rest of India's batting, except for a late burst by Shivam Dube, could only save India from this steep humiliation for not finishing at their lowest-ever total.
Indian team is at the crossroads of challenges. The huge run rate difference is the key factor. Must win games against Zimbabwe and West Indies with a bigger margin is what India can think of now.
The right balance and no more blunders, either in team selections or batting order, are required to be in place.
Conclusion:
When India needed their best spinner-all-rounder, he was not considered. T20 World Cup 2024, Axar Patel scored a crucial 47 runs in the semi-finals against South Africa and even broke the crucial partnership between Stubbs and De Kock.
The game was lost when South Africa took charge, and their middle-order batting provided the much-needed thrust to put the tough target on the board.
The Indian Selection Committee has turned a blind eye to most enterprising players in this format.
Why Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal will not be in the team remains the most sought-after question.
When India needed both Virat and Rohit, they weren't available. Who all are responsible for this debacle? Who will answer for all these wrongdoings at the cost of Indian Cricket? We need to put aside personal agenda over Nation's pride.
Do we need a professional team to handle at all levels where no personal choices over Cricketing needs are measured!
- Coaches and Selectors need to be humane to the cause of the players who have given everything for the Nation.
- Virat-Rohit left the game together in the two formats. Why? This has changed the saga of Cricket India.
- Being unbiased and supportive of the players is what Cricket India requires now!
What should be the way forward to tide us over this critical situation in Indian Cricket?
Many questions are hovering around, but it is the team India think tank who need to overcome all these tactical blunders and unite to produce the best display in the remaining games.
Cricket India needs total revamping at various levels. If not done, the 2027 WC and 227 ICC WTC will also receive a similar jolt with such performances.
#BCCI must be having great plans ahead for Indian Cricket. 🏏

Losing a match here or there, or a bad day in office is understandable - but the team management should understand the importance on NRR - and given appropriate instructions to the batters, that even if the match was lost in first 6 overs, they should try to bat deep and score as many runs as feasible, rather than throwing in the towel by unnecessary rash shots! If they just plodded on to 140 odd, the NNR would have been manageable! India ka samasya Gambhir hai - Agar - kar te nahi kuch toh Test, ODI kay baad ab T20 bhi down down down!
ReplyDeleteAnalysed correctly....situation has really become very gambhir.
