Pressure on the Champions or sudden dip in the form; IPL 2026? Globally, the toughest T20 league - Indian Premier League
The World’s toughest T20 league has started on a promising note after India's recent back-to-back T20 World Cup victory. The first two games saw a record turnout to witness the Champions and the legends of the game. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, though retired from the T20 International arena, provided some excellent Cricketing entertainment with authentic hits to the fence / over the fence.
The first seven days of the tournament gave a glimpse of the star performers and for those who couldn't start off effectively. The pressure is mounting on the teams and their players to perform.
Decoding the back-to-back loss of the Kolkata Knight Riders:
The 6th game in the TATA IPL 2026 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad was rated as the fight between two great teams in IPL history, with Champion players.
On one side, the likes of Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan in SRH and the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Rinku Singh, Varun Chakravarty, and Cameron Green on the other side in KKR, the competition was on the cards, but the game ended with KKR losing the grip on the game in both the sessions.
Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head gave a flying start with both of them attacking the bowlers in tandem. The power play saw an exciting cricket match with the score reaching an impressive 84 for 1. Travis Head was out scoring 36 runs in 17 balls.
Rinku Singh, the ace fielder on the rope, took a blinder to get rid of Ishan Kishan before the Sunrisers Captain could score big.
The experienced bowling unit of Varun Chakravarty and Sunil Naraine couldn't find an answer with Abhishek Sharma going great guns. It seems Varun Chakravarty has lost his rhythm since the World Cup, and his one over for 25 runs prompted the Captain to replace him.
The flying start was restricted to 123 for 4 in 10 overs, with Rinku Singh taking some great catches on the boundary line. Late bursts by Klassen (52 in 35 balls) and Nitish Reddy (39 in 24 balls) gave a respectable total of 226 to chase by KKR.
It was tough luck for KKR, who couldn't capitalise on the initial charge commanded by Flinn. Raghuvansh continued his form from the 1st game and scored a brilliant 52 in 29 balls.
SRH had a good outing in batting, bowling and fielding. Jaydev Unadkat was the pick of the bowlers with appreciable figures of 3 for 21. Unadkat was especially active in the field, taking two sharp catches. Two silly run-outs added to the woes of KKR. Nitish Reddy took two important wickets in his spell. His all-around performance was a boon in this game for SRH.
KKR, for the first time since 2012, had lost back-to-back games in IPL after starting off the game. SRH won the important match by 65 runs.
After tasting defeat in the first game against the Mumbai Indians by 6 wickets, the Kolkata Knight Riders had planned to reframe their game plan. The first game saw moderate bowling efforts unable to put the brakes on Mumbai Indians batters, with Rohit Sharma and Rickelton doing the talking and winning it for their team.
After the two games, the KKR team management is under severe pressure to handle the situation, as their bowling unit has failed to perform as expected. Both Varun Chakravarty and Sunil Naraine were failures in the first two games. The way they had rescued KKR during earlier seasons, penetration, lime and length were missing.
Debacle of Chennai Super Kings:
The other team, who are yet to start their campaign on a positive note, are the Chennai Super Kings. The first game against the Rajasthan Royals, without MS Dhoni, saw them lose the game badly. Even Sanju Samson, playing for CSK this season, couldn't come to the rescue in their first game. Shivam Dube, the other World Cup star, also couldn't give the much-needed support to the team. Vaibhav Suryavanshi scored a 17-ball 52 to set the tone for the victory.
The seventh game of the tournament between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings gave hope to recover from the earlier loss with some steady batting by the youngster Ayush Mhatre. Sanju Samson, the player of the T20 World Cup, failed once again without contributing to the team's cause. Ayush Mhatre gave some jaw-dropping moments, scoring 52 runs in 29 balls and ultimately scoring 73 in his 43-ball stay.
Sarfaraz Khan, the player ignored time and again in the Indian Cricket scheme of things, scored a whirlwind 32 of 12 balls. A little cameo, but gave solid middle-order support to the team. Shivam Dube also contributed 47 runs in 25 balls, a welcome sign for the all-rounder to find his rhythm.
Chennai Super Kings, even with a balanced bowling lineup of Punjab Kings, consisting of Yajuvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, and Marco Jansen, scored a competitive 209 in their allotted 20 overs, giving a challenge to Punjab Kings.
Punjab Kings chased the target with tactical supremacy to win by 5 wickets.
Chennai Super Kings team management and the players are under severe criticism by the local fans & supporters. The captainship of Rituraj Gaikwad is also under the scanner. With MS Dhoni still recovering from his injury, the team badly misses him and his wisdom on the field. Tough days ahead for CSK when they meet RCB in their next outing.
Challenges faced by the teams:
Delhi Capitals: Rishabh Pant, the ace wicket-keeper batsman, was not in his usual self in the first game while opening the innings. A sad run out, some gaps in captainship decisions and losing the game against Delhi Capitals highlighted the match.
Delhi Capitals were tottering at 26 for 4, and Lucknow Super Giants, finishing the game at 145 for 4, brought the team management, the captain, and the franchise into some animated discussions. The discussions with the Captain may range from his own contributions and the captainship of Rishabh as the partnership between Sameer Rizvi (70 runs in 47 balls) and Tristan Tubbs took the victory away from Delhi Capitals.
Captain Shubman Gill, leading the Gujarat Titans, has a pack of great T20 players, including Jos Buttler, Glen Phillips and last season's highest run getter, Sai Sudarshan, but couldn't take advantage of the batting strength. Punjab Kings could reach the target of 162 runs in 19.1 overs.
Cooper Connolly scored a brilliant 72 runs in 44 balls and sealed the match in favour of Punjab Kings, though the star batter Shreyas Iyer couldn't match his own expectations.
Conclusion:
The erstwhile Champion teams, which require introspection and also play like the Champions, Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, stand at the bottom of the table amongst the 10 teams.
The onus now will be on the players, the coach and the team management to reinvent their strategy and turn around from the next games.
With the World Cup-winning players, namely Sanju Samson and Varun Chakravarty, yet to find their rhythm for their respective teams, the 19th season of the Indian Premier League 2026 is at a crossroads for the bottom two teams, KKR & CSK and for both teams, the crucial games ahead will be the test of their competitiveness and talents who need to perform with there experience.

So true , great read.
