The Renaissance of Red-Ball Cricket: 2026’s Unforgettable Test Season

Test Cricket and its essence 2026👌

The current year has already witnessed some excellent games of Test Cricket from January 2026 to August 2026, showcasing monumental feats that have truly elevated the passion for the red-ball game.

Ravi Shastri had nicely summed up: “The beauty of Test cricket is dominating each session over five days and picking 20 wickets to win."

The last India vs England series in England produced some of the best performances and games, which definitely elevated the passion for the red-ball game.

The calendar year started with a great win by Australia in the Ashes series; England had a washout, with Australia winning 4-1.

Bangladesh vs Pakistan

The team which always was treated as the minnows when it came to competing with SENA teams or even the best Asian teams, be it India or Pakistan; The amazing journey this year in Test Cricket for Bangladesh, riding on collective performances by batters and bowlers.

The first series between Bangladesh and Pakistan brought out the best from the Tigers, a monumental chapter in their cricketing history. Bangladesh secured a complete whitewash with a 2-0 victory over Pakistan.

Whether it was Taijul Islam's masterful nine-wicket haul in the second encounter, Litton Das earning Player of the Match with his crucial 126 and 67, or the 39-year-old veteran Mushfiqur Rahim securing Player of the Series with 253 total runs, the squad remained impenetrable, etching their names in history with a series-clinching victory.

During the opening match, Captain Shanto led from the front with a magnificent ton and an 87-run knock, deservedly taking home the Player of the Match trophy. Meanwhile, Mehidy Hasan Miraz dominated with the ball, claiming two separate five-wicket hauls in the contest.

The Tigers completely overwhelmed Pakistan in every facet of the game, demonstrating that their ascent in the red-ball format is the fruit of immense labour and the strategic cultivation of a versatile bowling attack featuring both pace and spin.

Bangladesh vs Australia 1st Test Match

The Tigers' incredible momentum in the longest format has carried forward, as they stunned Australia with a victory in the series opener.

The tour opener was a practice game against CA XI. Bangladesh suffered a shocking collapse to a young Cricket Australia XI in Darwin, getting bowled out for just 54 in their second innings to lose the three-day tour match by an innings and 38 runs. 22-year-old left-arm fast bowler Campbell Thompson starred with stunning figures of 8 for 25.

The humiliating defeat completely lowered external expectations, but it catalysed a fierce response at the same venue;

A truly historic feat on Australian soil—huge congratulations to Bangladesh for a spectacular 9-wicket win against the formidable Aussies in their own territory. This landmark success is a watershed moment for Bangladesh Cricket, destined to be remembered for ages.

After Australia won the toss and chose to bat on a pitch with a distinct green tint, the home side struggled to find their rhythm. The Australian batting order collapsed for a modest 198, a failure that immediately ceded control and set the tone for the entire match.

Australia couldn't recover from this shock first-innings debacle, and the story continued in the second innings as well, with Australia bundled out for 284 runs. Steve Smith, with 71 in the first innings, and Cameron Green, with 104, were the only notable scorers.

The triumph featured Hasan Mahmud, the man of the match, delivering a masterful nine-wicket haul with his effective seam bowling, while Tanzid Hasan reached his historic maiden ton. This was further bolstered by the versatile Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who secured both a vital fifty and a five-wicket display. Leading from the front, skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto proved exceptional through his batting prowess and strategic command.

Hazlewood was the pick of the bowlers from Australia in the 1st innings with his six-wicket haul, and Starc were not enough for the Tigers to reach a mammoth 426 in the first innings.

The display of pace and spin combined by the visitors took the home team by surprise at Darwin, and the Bangladesh team once again proved their supremacy in all departments against the first-ranked team in the ICC Test Cricket rankings.

The winning captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, clearly describes the win as the best for Bangladesh Cricket and also gives full credit to the seniors Mushfiqur Rahim and Mominul Haque for nurturing the winning mindset amongst the group. He goes on to add that the best thing to happen in Bangladesh cricket is getting more inclined to red-ball cricket, and also that the fast bowlers really wanted to outshine their competitors in this department. He gives full credit to the disciplined pace bowling followed by an effective batting display.

The second Test starts on 21st of August, and all eyes will be focused on another interesting Test Match.

New Zealand vs England

The series had a strange happening after England won the 1st Test at Lords when the England Captain was dropped for the 2nd Test.

The news made the headlines - England captain Ben Stokes and bowler Gus Atkinson have both been left out of the second test against New Zealand that starts next week , following an investigation into an incident in a London nightclub, the ECB said on Wednesday. Former skipper Joe Root will ‌lead the team at The Oval in the absence of Stokes.

However, after this incident, England could never recover, and New Zealand won the series 2-1.

The Turnaround: New Zealand lost the opening Test by 115 runs, but bounced back with a massive 253-run win at The Oval and clinched the decider by 160 runs at Trent Bridge.

End of the Ben Stokes Era: Ben Stokes announced his retirement from Test cricket and stepped down from his four-year captaincy following the final defeat.

India vs Sri Lanka, 1st Test at Galle, Sri Lanka

After a stinging setback in November 2025, when a series defeat to South Africa sent shockwaves through the camp and threatened to derail their ICC WTC road to the finals, Team India roared back with a vengeance!

Emerging from an eight-month hiatus, the Men in Blue reignited their quest for red-ball supremacy in a high-stakes away series against Sri Lanka. The opening Test at Galle wasn’t just a match; it was a statement of intent.

The spotlight belonged to the sensational Devdutt Padikkal, who etched his name into folklore with a breathtaking maiden Test century on Indian Independence Day! His magnificent 167 was a masterclass in poise, bolstered by a gritty 82 from KL Rahul and a vital 51 from Dhruv Jurel, catapulting India to a formidable 462. Under the relentless pressure of a scoreboard mountain, Sri Lanka crumbled for 284, dismantled by the wizardry of newcomer Manav Suthar (4/76) and the veteran precision of Ravindra Jadeja (3/57). Jadeja went on to achieve the landmark of 350 Test wickets.

Sensing blood in the water, India played a high-octane second innings, with Rishabh Pant’s explosive 66 setting the stage for a dramatic finale. Setting the hosts a daunting target of 372, India turned the screws, ready to transform Galle into a theatre of triumph! During his journey, Rishabh Pant became the 1st Indian player to smash 100 sixes in Test Matches. He is now 3rd in the overall hierarchy in Test Match history.

While chasing the target, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 204, ensuring a 165-run victory for the visiting team. Sonal's heroic 84 couldn't help the home team save the game. Manav Suthar, the left-arm orthodox spinner, made good use of the crease and, with his measured line and length, came out with flying colours. His achievement of 6 for 55 in the second innings and 4 for 76 in the 1st innings, with 10 wickets in the match, makes him the youngest Indian to achieve this feat in Test Cricket.

With the win, India stands in the middle of the points table, and the team needs to continue their winning momentum in the remaining games to surge into the top bracket in the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship.

There is a lot of excitement still left in the red ball game with the upcoming fixtures for all the teams.

After the chaos of Ben Stokes' retirement and the sacking of Brendon McCullum, England are in a strange holding pattern. The new era does not begin in earnest until Stephen Fleming takes up his post as coach in the winter

The England vs Pakistan game has started, and Pakistan were skittled out for 171 in their first innings at Headingly. Tongue and Robinson were outstanding, claiming five wickets each in the first innings. England are 112 for 2 with their Captain Joe Root at the crease. The fragility of Pakistan's batting was exposed to some fine seam bowling of English bowlers.

Forthcoming WTC Series (Sep–Dec 2026)

Pakistan in England: August–September 2026 (Ongoing)

Australia in South Africa: October 2026

Bangladesh in South Africa: November 2026

India in New Zealand: November–December 2026

New Zealand in Australia (Trans-Tasman Trophy): December 2026–January 2027

England in South Africa (Basil D'Oliveira Trophy): December 2026–January 2027

India has another important series before they wrap up the Test Championship games.

The Australia tour of India: January 20 – February 26, 2027 (Border-Gavaskar 5-Test series) will be an interesting series for India’s road to the finals.

  1. Very well researched work so undoubtedly very well written

  2. Interesting. But it’s definitely on the decline in previous super powers, England, Australia, Windies and Pakistan. Clock is ticking for sure.

    1. True...the situation is getting reversed or changed to more passionate performances and dedicated teams.

  3. Well compiled and documented. Bangladesh defeating Australia in their home ground was a stunner. This team may prove to be an outlier in the forthcoming series.

  4. Very nice summary. Evidently two giant nations of cricket england and india are lacking intensity and intent as the business end of WTC approaches.
