ROKO to ROKOGI: When Two Legends Meet the Next Generation

ROKO to ROKOGI: When Two Legends Meet the Next Generation

ROKO gave Indian cricket a generation of champions. ROKOGI could become the expression for what comes next — Rohit, Virat and Gill, three names representing experience, legacy and the future.

The transition from one era to a new platform happens in every sphere of life, be it sports or any other profession.

But transition does not always mean replacing the champions of the past. The need for champions in the dressing room is as important as giving opportunities to the new generation. Their experience, discipline and understanding of pressure can help build a stronger team.

Indian cricket is going through one such phase.

The transformation from Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to Shubman Gill and his young brigade is clearly visible. But perhaps the more interesting story is not ROKO making way for Gill.

It is ROKO helping Gill prepare for the next chapter of Indian cricket.

That is where ROKOGI — Rohit, Kohli and Gill —becomes an interesting combination.

## Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill — three generations, one journey

Back from the Lord's ODI, Team India started its home series against the West Indies.

A few months ago, we witnessed a masterclass from Rohit Sharma at Lord's, where he scored a fabulous 138 against England. In Thiruvananthapuram, India once again demonstrated its dominance, chasing down the West Indies' target in 41.4 overs and winning by eight wickets.

This Virat Kohli innings will be termed a sheer spectacle, different from other great knocks. It was not only the 139 off 88 balls (4x10, 6x9), but with an extraordinary strike rate of 157.95, it turned out to be a real treat for cricket lovers round the globe.

The opening pair of Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma started smoothly, with both playing their elegant and stylish strokes. Their 74-run opening partnership gave India the perfect platform before Rohit was dismissed for a well-made 32.

Gill continued. Then came Virat Kohli.

The young captain and the experienced master put together a mind-boggling 151-run partnership. Gill brought up his 10th ODI century and scored 110.

At the other end, Virat Kohli produced another reminder of why his name has become synonymous with excellence in Indian cricket.

## Virat Kohli — the hunger continues

  • Dedication. Discipline. Desire.

The hunger to perform and the love for the game — all combined together, that is Virat Kohli.

Virat never looked like he had played his last ODI in July 2026. After a gap of two months, Virat, the chase master, walked into the field to finish the game, and he did it in Virat style.

The West Indian pacer Joseph had reasonable success against Virat in earlier games, but in this game it was Virat who took charge right from the first over.

Ever since Virat had taken retirement from Test cricket, as he says, he had rediscovered himself and batted freely, independently enjoying the game. The aggression and body language all spoke and hinted towards a new Virat Kohli taking up the challenge to win the coveted World Cup trophy in 2027.

Raining sixes and treating the boundary rope with almost utter irrelevance, Kohli proved his class once again with a magnificent unbeaten 139.

  • He also became the fastest batter to reach 15,000 ODI runs. Virat would reach 15000 runs was expected, so was the 55th ODI century.

But Virat Kohli smashed nine sixes in an ODI, more than the entire batting line-ups of both India and West Indies combined (eight) may not be in anyone’s wildest dreams.

  • unticked

But after the achievement, it was clear that milestones don't occupy his mind.

His philosophy remains simple: read the situation, do what the team needs and let the personal numbers come as a by-product.

He said he felt grateful and blessed to have played for India for so long. He also emphasised the importance of understanding the game, staying physically fit and keeping the mind fresh.

At this stage of his career, he believes cricket is increasingly a game of the mind.

There is still another challenge for him — to find another gear, to discover another version of his batting and continue enjoying the game.

That hunger is perhaps what has kept Virat Kohli relevant for more than 18 years.

## The last dance for ROKO to participate in ODI WC 2027

Kohli has already indicated that the 2027 ODI World Cup will be his last World Cup.

That gives the journey towards the tournament an additional emotional dimension. But Kohli does not appear to be looking too far ahead.

His immediate focus is on staying fit, working on different facets of his game, sprinting across the boundary in the closing overs and maintaining intensity on the field.

He also spoke about enjoying every opportunity rather than approaching it with anxiety.

For a player who has already achieved almost everything the game can offer, that mindset says a lot.

The final chapter is not about chasing statistics. It is about enjoying the privilege of wearing the India jersey for as long as the journey continues.

## Shubman Gill — transformation from a player to a leader under ROKO

This is where Shubman Gill's transformation from a player to a leader under ROKO becomes significant. Gill is no longer simply the young batter expected to carry Indian cricket into the future. He is now leading India.

And he is doing so while sharing the dressing room with two players who have experienced almost every possible situation in international cricket. That experience can be invaluable.

Gill's 110 in Thiruvananthapuram showed his batting maturity. But his comments about Kohli were equally interesting.

Gill feels Kohli is enjoying his cricket more these days and playing with a greater sense of freedom. He also pointed out that Kohli could always clear the ropes whenever he chooses.

After everything Kohli has done for India, Gill feels he has earned the right to play the way he wants.

There is something important in that relationship. The young captain is not trying to overshadow the senior champion. And the senior champion is not trying to overshadow the young captain. Both appear to understand their roles.

## Kohli on Gill — leadership through support

Kohli also spoke about his partnership with Gill and his development as captain.

For Kohli, there is a clear reason Gill has been given the responsibility of leading the side. He understands how to take the team through different situations in a match. Batting alongside Gill, therefore, becomes relatively simple.

There is little need for lengthy conversations. Sometimes, just an occasional tactical word is enough. Then the focus returns to building partnerships and doing what the team requires.

Kohli also made it clear that whenever Gill needs support on the field, he is ready to provide it.

That is perhaps one of the most important aspects of the transition in Indian cricket.

Leadership is not always transferred through speeches. Sometimes it happens through presence, conversation and example.

## The dressing room requires ROKO

The transition will continue. Young players will arrive. New leaders will emerge. Roles will change. But the dressing room requires ROKO for as long as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remain part of India's ODI plans.

  • Not merely for the runs they can score.

  • Their value is much bigger.

  • They know what pressure feels like.

  • They know what it means to play in a World Cup.

  • They know how a dressing room reacts after a great victory and, equally importantly, after a painful defeat.

  • The younger players can learn from that experience simply by sharing the same dressing room.

This is why transition should not mean separation.

The new generation needs opportunities, but it can also benefit from the presence of champions who have already walked the road.

## Kuldeep and the importance of the right combination

Thiruvananthapuram ODI also brought an important positive for Team India. Kuldeep Yadav, who had not been a regular presence in the playing XI in recent outings, returned and made a significant impact. His 4/40 played a major role in restricting West Indies during the middle overs.

It was a welcome sign for the team and the captain.

Kuldeep Yadav candidly mentions during post match interview while collecting the player of the match award, " I never thought that I will be shortlisted for this award, as Virat Kohli just had played one of the finest One Day knocks ever and the Captain Shubman Gill batted beautifully along with Virat." But he sounded happy to comeback in the team with this performance.

As India builds towards the ODI World Cup 2027, selecting the right playing XI and combination will be crucial. Reputation alone cannot decide the team. Conditions, opposition and the requirements of the match have to be considered. That balance will also be one of Gill's biggest challenges as captain.

## ROKO to ROKOGI — the real transformation

Indian cricket is not simply standing between the old and the new. It is somewhere in between.

Rohit Sharma represents experience and leadership.

Virat Kohli represents experience, intensity and an extraordinary hunger to perform.

Shubman Gill represents the next generation and the new leadership.

Around them is a young brigade waiting to create its own identity.

Perhaps that is the real meaning of ROKO to ROKOGI.

  • It is not about one generation disappearing overnight.
  • It is about carrying forward what has been built while allowing something new to grow.
  • Virat and Rohit may be approaching the final phase of their ODI journey.
  • Gill's journey as a leader has only begun.

And if the experience of ROKO can combine with the hunger and ambition of Gill and the younger brigade, Indian cricket can enter its next chapter with something very valuable — continuity without standing still.

The last dance for ROKO may be approaching.

But before the music stops, there is still time to guide the next generation.

Because perhaps the greatest contribution of champions is not only in the runs they score.

It is in what they leave behind.

  1. Interesting subject and you have rightly chosen the three icons of Indian cricket.
The vast experience of handling tough situations, captaincy decisions, superb batting techniques are a few things Shubham Gill can feel proud of learning from ROKO. This is an extremely important phase of the future of Indian cricket and as long as these two stalwarts are there and share the dressing room, all budding cricketers will benefit immensely from their class and high standards.
